Here’s the archive Word Made Flesh Beggars Society meeting this past April where Marcia Ghali interviews me about my newest book, ‘Friendship at the Margins.’
Excited about the next interview in the “Up Close” Series - a chance to catch up with Chris Heuertz. Chris is the International Director of Word Made Flesh and the author of Simple Spirituality and his most recent book Friendship at the Margins. He’s a great friend and has rich and deep experiences from around the world that have shaped his thoughts on leadership, faith, community and...
“Pilgrimage of a Soul” by Phileena Heuertz, Pt.1... →
My wonderful friends, the Heuertz, inspire me so much through their work with Word Made Flesh among the world’s most vulnerable of the poor. If you’ve read my blog recently, you’ve probably found a post reflecting on a part of Chris’ book, “Friendship at the Margins.”
Well, Phileena has very recently come out with a new book called “Pilgrimage of a Soul” which hits key themes of contemplative...
An Interview with Phileena Heuertz :: by Jamie... →
Living & working in the context I do, the hard work of missional community & activism with the marginalized lives in difficult tension with the need to a life of disciplined spirituality, of contemplation. It is, perhaps, the single deepest challenge I face in my role in community. That is why Phileena Heuertz’s new book “Pilgrimage of a Soul: Contemplative Spirituality for the Active...

One of the encouraging things to me about our church is how many folks are structuring their lives in direct response to their faith in Jesus. There is a genuine desire to journey along the narrow way of discipleship despite hardships and sacrifices. Careers, housing, education and neighborhood involvement are all issues I observe people wrestling with in light of their...

Now that I’ve viewed these first two movies (I won’t be able to call them ‘films’), I feel pressure to pick a team: Edward or Jacob.
My decision making process goes like this:
1) Native American or...

'Why Anne Rice Has Never Been More of a Christian'... →
Ironically, author Anne Rice may have been more of a Christian yesterday than she ever was, when she announced, on Facebook, that she was quitting Christianity and renouncing any claim to the title “Christian.”
“For those who care,”
she wrote,
“and I understand if you don’t: Today I quit being a Christian. I’m out. I remain committed to Christ as always...
The closer we get to Christ, however, the more ‘dangerous’ he becomes- dangerous...
