As If We Don’t Have Enough To Do Around Here :: The Inaugural WMF Omaha Office Push-Up Contest

After our staff meeting on Thursday this week, we will be having the first WMF Omaha Office Push-Up Contest/“Push-Up-A-Thon.”

As if we don’t already have enough to do around here, sometimes we come up with little competitive events to keep the thrill of working in Omaha alive.

For example, in January 2008 we had a little contest where 4 of us stood outside in the freezing cold barefoot. There is video proof of this festival of pain. That day the wind chill in Omaha registered a crushing NEGATIVE 14 degrees. The pavement felt like fire on the bottom of our bare feet.

In February 2008 we had the 20:20 Contest. During the 20:20 competition, we had 20 hours and 20 minutes to listen to the same song on repeat—I think I won that one, listening to “Because of You (Remix) [Featuring Kanye West]” by Ne-Yo. Logged 117 plays the first day of the competition.

It’s been a while since we’ve doing anything like that so this week we’re reviving intra-office competitions.

Jara sent the rules out, they are pretty straight forward:

  • Each department = one team
  • Modified pushups = .5 pushups, full pushups = 1 pushups
  • There will be an example of both push up versions at the next staff meeting.
  • You can do a combination of modified and full or just one
  • There won’t be a time limit on this competition, you will want to max out
  • You will have four :15 second breaks to rest between pushups when tired, after your fourth :15 second break, you will have to continue going or you are done

The winning team will be determined by the average number of push-ups completed by the department.

The “Push-Up-A-Thon” component to the event turned into a little fundraiser. Individual staff are actually taking pledges for our support accounts (certain amounts per push-up or a total pledge for completing the event—Phileena and I even got a sponsor from London, England to back us!). Departments are also using the “Push-Up-A-Thon” to raise department funds. If you want to make a pledge here’s the on-line form.

The competitors are as follows (grouped in the teams they’re pushing-up for):

  • Administrative Department : Cesia Gonzalez, Michelle Dawn Hoeft, Liz Ivkovich, Caldwell Manners and Paul Yoder
  • Advocacy Team (a.k.a. the A-Team): Daphne Eck Coppock (rumor has it, Daphne might actually do the push-ups from her sabbatical digs in Minnesota and call in her total), Marcia Ghali, Mandy Mowers and Jara B Sturdivant
  • Community Care Center: Phileena Heuertz, Amanda Knihal, Silas West and Hilary Wilken
  • International Offices for Partnership: Chris Heuertz, Caldwell Manners (his total will factor into both the Admin. Dept. and the Partnership Office), Twyla O’Callaghan (she’ll be calling in her total from the WMF satellite office in Decatur, Georgia) and Danielle Powell

Anyway, should be fun. Here’s a little slideshow trailer put together by the A-Team. And Be sure to check in with us Thursday afternoon to see how about the International Offices for Partnership dominate. In fact, we will have a live video feed Thursday, just check in with the Word Made Flesh Twitter feed to find the link if you want to watch the action.
