3rd Annual Oompa Loompa Love Songs Playlist :: The Best Songs of 2010

Putting the 3rd Annual Oompa Loompa Love Song Playlist together ended up being harder than ever. The 1rst Annual and 2nd Annual lists were lots of fun and seemed to come together almost naturally. But as 2010 started wrapping up, I was lamenting on how thin good music seemed this year.

Then, I started to narrow down my list and ended up with an additional 54 ‘Honorable Mentions’ (that won’t be listed here—sorry) from artists already on this list and others who didn’t make the final cut (Arcade Fire, Badly Drawn Boy, Broken Bells, Carla Bruni, Coldplay, Corinne Bailey Rae, Ian Axel, The Insurgency, Jack Johnson, Janelle Monae, Jeff Bridges, Leela James, Lost In the Trees, M.I.A., The National, Phoenix, Sade, Satellite, Shakira, Sleeping At Last, Sufjan Stevens, T.I., and Train).

I imagine this will be the most controversial of the modern edition of the Oompa Loompa Love Songs, and yes, I am a sucker for a catchy pop song, good hip hop and of course Rihanna (who made the list 6 times). Don’t hate.

So, as best as I could arrange my favorite 40 songs from 2010, here ya go…

  1. ‘I’ll Try Anything Once’ by Julian Casablancas of The Strokes (there’s a piano version out there that’s significantly better than the ‘electric organ’ sounding on available on iTunes)– thanks brother Ben

  3. ‘Love the Way You Lie’ (feat. Rihanna) by Eminem from Recovery + ‘Love the Way You Lie, Pt. II’ by Rihanna and Eminem from Loud + ‘Love the Way You Lie (Piano Version)’ by Rihanna from Loud – yes, gonna have to count all 3 variations of this as a single unit
  4. ‘The Leave Behind’ from Jeremy Larson’s Fort Christmas on The Feathers – you can download it here
  5. ‘Superfast Jellyfish’ (feat. Gruff Rhys & De La Soul) by Gorillaz from Plastic Beach
  6. ‘Dynamite’ by Taio Cruz from Rokstarr – yes, I am a little embarrassed that this is in my top 10
  7. ‘Opposite of Adults’ by Chiddy Bang from The Preview – can’t stop listening to this one
  8. ‘California Gurls’ (feat. Snoop Dogg) by Katy Perry from Teenage Dream – also a little embarrassed about this, but Snoop seriously dominates this track
  9. ‘Mama Hold My Hand’ by Aloe Blacc from Good Things
  10. ‘How I Got Over’ by The Roots from How I Got Over – thanks Angie
  11. ‘Horchata’ by Vampire Weekend from Contra – I got 394 iTunes plays on this one, and, I still love it

  •  2010 Double Bonus Track ‘We Trying to Stay Alive’ (feat. Refugee Allstars) by Wyclef Jean – I’m giving this a 2010-Comback Award for landing in ‘The Other Guys’
