Subtitles and Footnotes on the Life of Christopher L Heuertz

Well, somehow I thought putting this together would be easier than compiling last year’s list. But I’ve struggled.

Initially I was just going to list my top 20 songs from 2009, but the more I listened, re-listened and then added/removed songs, I had close to 60.

Anyway, I’ve finally made myself widdle this down to the best 40 songs of 2009. Of course there are many that should have made this list, so tell me what I missed:

Lions and Dragons - Zach Williams, Story Time (7 minutes of this song still isn’t enough)
Laughing With - Regina Spektor, Far
Delirious (feat. Soulja Boy Tell ‘Em) - Vistoso Bosses (I still blame the good folks at Paste Magazine for introducing me to this)
Adventures in Solitude - the New Pornographers (sort of the theme song for my year)
Can’t Stop Partying - Weezer, Raditude (it was all I could do to not make this the #1 song… seriously love Weezer AND how in the world does Weezer score Lil’ Wayne on a track!?)
For You - Matisyahu, Light
Blue Jeans & White T-Shirts - The Gaslight Anthem
True Faith - Anberlin (Stephen actually dedicated this one to Phileena and me during a show at the Sokol, sounded good then, but the single is almost as good as New Order’s original)
Not Even Human - Angel Taylor, Love Travels (Angel Taylor is one of my very favorite discoveries of 2009, I actually wanted to put her whole album on this list)
Curse Your Branches - David Bazan, Curse Your Branches
We Fall - Emmanuel Jal (former child soldier in the Sudan, his story is amazing and his music pops)
Like Steps In A Dance - Anchor & Braille (this is Stephen Christian’s, from Anberlin, solo project. They very generously did a little WMF benefit show this summer and I haven’t been able to get this song out of my head since then)
Why Modern Radio is A-OK - Roman Candle, Oh Tall Tree In The Ear (thanks Nada, been way too long since I’ve heard such a great tune)
When It All Goes Away - David Hodges, The Rising EP (I also wanted to put this whole album on the list)
The Uncomfortable Truth - Nneka, The Uncomfortable Truth EP (Nneka is also one of my favorite 2009 discoveries)
Empire State of Mind (feat. Alicia Keys) - Jay-Z
