I Subscribe
I am a print-media junkie.
Sure, I hit up the Google News page every day, but I just love holding a real newspaper in my hands—ink smudges and all.
And I love to read magazines.
This past month I’ve been on 25 airplanes. Lots of time to read. But when I’m even just a little bit sleepy, it’s tough for me to keep my head in some of the books I try to slug my way through. So I often opt for a magazine.
Now I’m not sure when I first fell in love with magazines, but since college (I was a faithful 4-year subscriber to Surfing back then) I have been a serial subscriber. And it doesn’t help that I get so many free subscriptions as a last-ditch effort to use up soon-to-be expired frequent flier miles. I should also admit, I’m pretty much a sucker for the $9 “Professional Rate” subscriptions… that would partly explain why I subscribe to Essence (yes, it’s true…) OR the “Name Your Own Price” subscription (love it, thanks Paste Magazine—that was awesome!).
So, here it goes. The list. This is what I get:
- Adbusters
- The Atlantic
- Blender
- Christianity Today
- Essence
- Fermi
- Global Futures (this actually replaced Together which was SUPER great)
- Good
- Harvard Business Review
- International Bulletin of Missionary Research
- Mother Jones
- Neue
- The New Republic
- The New Yorker
- Newsweek (used to get Time and US News & World Report as well)
- Paste
- The Plain Truth
- Radar
- Relevant
- Risen
- Rolling Stone (waaaay back in the day I scored the 50 year “Life Time” subscription for just $99)
- Spin
- Travel + Leisure
- Vibe
Poor Paul, he collects whatever’s in the PO Box for our community each morning and has to sort all these magazines into the pile of mail that ends up on my desk (and ultimately into my backpack for the countless hours I spend in airports and on planes).
So am I missing something great? Is there something else I should getting (please be reasonable, I used to get The Economist but the subscription is something crazy like $199 now)?
