Bamboozled… the Evangelical Vote and Abortion

Wow. Guess some of you are mad at me because I vote for Brent Anderson (we have gotten word of at least one vote for him in Florida’s early voting process—go Brent!). Some of those comments were classic…

For the record, I’m pro-life. But most of you who commented on the “Brent for Prez” post aren’t technically pro-life—you are anti-abortion. The differentiation is important. If you were really pro-life, you’d be anti-war and against the death penalty. But the truth is, you’re simply anti-abortion.

Sadly, if you’re simply anti-abortion and have made that your sole political issue dictating how you vote, you have been taken advantage of—bamboozled. The kind of person that Karl Rove uses (actually, manipulates) to win elections.

I know you’ll want to argue this till you’re blue in the face (because anti-abortion people who think they’re pro-life are some of the most illogical folks I’ve every debated with), but you can’t win the argument. Your vote has been wasted. If you disagree, just look at the impact of electing anti-abortion presidents.

Since 1973, when Roe vs. Wade made abortion legal in the USA, nearly 70% of our presidential administrations have been anti-abortion (good job Thomas—you’ll always be Brent to me—Graeve for pointing this out). And it hasn’t made any difference.

Ford (born in Omaha) 1973-1977 was anti-abortion, Carter 1977-1981 was personally anti-abortion but didn’t feel the government should legislate his personal conviction on the issue, Reagan 1981-1989 was anti-abortion, Bush I 1989-1993 was anti-abortion, Clinton 1993-2001 was pro-abortion, and today Bush II 2001-2009 is anti-abortion.

That’s all I got. History. Statistics. And the lack of impact of the evangelical anti-abortion vote—wasted and taken advantage of.
